The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto
What we did
- Book design
To feel a real connection with an artist’s work is the ultimate encounter for museum visitors. Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, or ‘Mart’, as it’s known in Italy, wanted to give visitors to their Lo Savio exhibition a tactile and intimate experience of the artist’s work.
They commissioned us to create a monograph of more than 50 exhibited works, alongside newly discovered archival materials, sketches, plans and photographs. We wanted this to be more than a conventional catalogue. Our aim was for visitors to feel that they were holding a piece of Lo Savio’s artistic journey in their hands.
We created a dual language book that extends the exhibition’s revisionist focus through a collection of essays, exhibition views and detailed appendices. Our design reflected Lo Savio’s doubler character: a severe formalist, at first sight, who turns out to be an experimental romantic.
Through carefully selected print materials, we gave a flexible, tactile quality to the monograph relating it to Lo Savio’s fascination with pliant materials, offering readers a material feel for the spirit of his work and the exhibition.
